Curious fact: You cannot legally buy or sell sawfish rostra. Sawfishes are protected by the Endangered Species Act in the U.S., so it is illegal to catch, harass, collect, buy or sell any part of any species of sawfish, including its rostrum. Florida has also passed strong laws about catching and buying or selling sawfish rostra or any sawfish parts. These measures were enacted to protect the remaining populations of sawfishes worldwide. All five species of sawfish are listed as endangered or critically endangered worldwide by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources since populations of all species are decreasing.
